650D or 60D, that is the question

This is my first post in this forum as a new member. My first concern is that the forum doesn't seem to have many visitors. However, I shall carry on.
I am relatively new to DSLR. I currently have the 550d and may soon have the opporunity to upgrade.
It seems to me that the two models could be twins. Although the 60D is over two years old while the 650D is only about eighteen months, I think. I have done some 'research' into both and am currently favouring the 650D Any and all thoughts on this matter would be gratefully accepted.

hi and welcome. the first thing i would say is that if you are going from a 550d to 60d apart from a swivel screen and a better body then theres not a lot of difference they both share the same sensor. the 650d has only been out about 1 year but it will be replaced this year the XXXd seems to have that cycle, also the 60d will be replaced this year probably will be announced end of this month and thats what i would wait for or even the 7d which will be later this year

Thank you for both your welcome and swift reply to my question. My photographic standards are thus. I am not and never will be, a photographer. I am and will probably remain, someone 'wot takes pictures', if you catch my drift.
I have only recently, last summer, plucked up the courage to move from 'auto' to using 'Tv' if I am trying to take a 'moving target', or 'Av' if I am trying to take a stationary one. I don't think that I shall ever be able to master the full manual mode.
I would like the best camera that is available, within my price range that is. This would prevent me from going up to the 6D range or even a full frame camera. So, my targets remain either the 60D Or the 650D or their successors provided that they are in a similar price range.
Perhaps I should add that I am a seventy one year old male. My lenses are thus, apart from the in house twin lens kit. Tamron 18-270mm, Sigma 120-400mm zoom, which is a little on the heavy side, although I do manage to get some decent shots handheld and on the auto mode with it. Canon 60mm macro, I should really have got the Canon 100mm macro. I am of the opinion that these are the only lenses that I shall ever need but again, any advice would be gratefully accepted.

And just to add to your list, it might cost a little more but what about the EOS M? I bought one yesterday at Focus on Imaging and first impressions are brilliant. Got it with the 22mm pancake lens (equivalent to 33mm with crop factor) and took it for a quick walk this afternoon. I'll let you know what the shots are like (if you're interested) when I've got the new version of Lightroom with appropriate codecs!

I'm always interested in the 'stuff' others do, especially the exif data and which camera settings, Tv, Av, Auto, sports or whatever. Then I can make a note and learn from them. I shall certainly look at the EOS M. I wasn't really aware of it. Muchly thankings.

No problem - I bought mine as a package: body, 22mm f2,8 pancake lens, flash unit and a mount adaptor (which includes a tripod fitting). I have to admit that the 70-200mm lens looks rather ridiculous mounted on it, though!

I passed it around at my camera club tonight - some people got on with it better than others as it has a touch screen much like a camera phone, so there's a bit of "pinching" and flicking going on. The Canon snappers seemed pretty happy with it.

I've taken a good look at the EOS-M. I hadn't realised that It is a 'compact'. I'm unsure how clear the view screen might be on sunny days or any type of day for that matter.

How much strain on the lens mount would a Tamron 18-270mm or indeed a giant Sigma 120-400mm place, I wonder, if they even fit the EOS-M. I fear that it may not be for me although I do appreciate your bringing it to my attention.

I shall wait until the announcement of the 70D and see what price it might be. I have been looking at the Pentax K30 because of all it's features. The main problem with Pentax 'stuff', for me at least, is the great lack of any sort of much valued assistance like this magazine gives to Canon.

'Idjits' like myself really need independent manuals, guide books et cetra, call them what you will and while Canon are superb in this aspect, I'm rather alarmed that Pentax do just about nothing in this subject. I have found only one 'help manual' for Pentax and that is only available as a downloaded 'ebook' from America and is not free.

My final choice will be from the Canon range, that is the 650D, 60D and or the 70D as I am very pleased with the shots that I am getting at the minute from my 550D.
