Advice on a lens for video/photo
Hi, hope someone can help.
I'm going to be buying a D800 and would like some help choosing a lens to go with it. I will have spent most of my budget on the camera itself so would like to get a couple of lenses for around the £500 mark until I can afford something that the D800 was built for.
I'm going to be filming and photographing sharks, whales and seabirds from a boat (they come very close - my 70-300 is usually too long and I miss a lot of the action changing lens) as well as filming informal interviews and landscape/seascape pans.
My current DSLR is a D80 so it is quite a jump and I have previously been using a range of Canon Handycams whose focal length does the job pretty well but I want to start to start moving away from the Handycam feel to my shots.
I don't know enough about professional video cameras to even consider which model to buy, plus they are well beyond my price range, and as I am starting to take my photography further I also need a DSLR to suit and last. So in my opinion the D800 is perfect.
I know I need an FX lens - I currently own a Nikon DX 18-135mm and a Sigma 70 - 300mm - which I'd like to continue to use even though I realise the image will not utilise the full frame format.
Will a DX lens make any difference to the quality when filming at 1920x1080?
Two lenses that stand out are the:
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens (a bit above budget)
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens
Could I go with the first as a good all rounder?
