Teleconverter and D700

I have a D700 and am looking for a reasonably priced lens that will accept a teleconverter with great results. Id like to end up with 500mm or more after attaching the teleconverter. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Paul

Hi Paul,
Welcome to the forum.
My experience of teleconverters is limited to the TC20 E converter. And I don't really like it, and as such very rarely use it. So crates in fact that I'm thinking of selling it.
The 1.4 and 1.7 may be better, but I've never used them.

The 2x converter does give good reach, but affects the aperture, so you need a fast lens to maintain a wide aperture when using the converter. I've never been that pleased with the results from my converter.

Have you considered something like the lens below? It may be the solution??

Hope this is of some help.

Maybe look at the option of using a Sigma 150-500mm lens rather than a shorter lens together with a TC.

It will give you better quality images at similar cost or similar quality images at far lower cost.

I use the Sigma lens with both my D800 and D800E with excellent results.

I have a 2x teleconverter, Paul, and it sits in a drawer. I don't like it and would suggest saving the money and getting a longer zoom lens.

I agree with the general consensus that teleconverters are less than wonderful.

In the old days of film, lenses were very expensive and the film resolution was not up to modern digital sensors so we lived with such things as 2X teleconverters. Even so the results were mediocre at best.

In today's world where so much is demanded in terms of sharpness, detail and clarity, I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole. You will be far better off saving up for a 500mm prime or something like the 150-500 Bigma.
