Yes and I know it`s a better lens but the cost.....

Yep, a lot more expensive than a 10-20, but if you sold that and your D80 you'd have a good sum ready for a down payment

I think with 52,000 clicks on it my D80 might be worthless other than as a back up camera for me. I may look to sell the 10-20 and my 18-200 at some point though to help fund plans.

I just got the Canon 10-22 for my 40D, and as mentioned above, it gives a very different perspective to a shot - something you couldn't replicate with stitched pic's at 17mm.
As to whether you 'need' it - check out what it will do for you and if you want that for your photography. At it's wider end such a lens is a special tool. I love it for landscapes (esp. with interesting skies) and for emphasizing objects - but get CLOSE!
