CHAT "MOTION" Weekend Competitiion 12th/13th December 2009

Hi Flake,
I guess I will often look at photographs from an artistic bent, enjoy and encourage pictures that push limits like this one I took on 35mm film without a filter. - Hopefully as time goes on my technical ability and knowledge will grow and I hope I do not offend anyone with my comments along the way.

Like Bob, I am interested to know which image you intended to vote on

Another site problem like viewing the videos for me eh! I have to periodically log in again when the site forgets me and soemtimes it will not recognise the password or username first couple of times. Useful advice for us to log back in though if it happens - thanks for that.

There were times when I wondered why some Photographs got voted on more than others which I thought were better then I realised not everyone thought as I did. However considering the short time span to compose and actually get a shot some of them have been truly amazing. I do miss fizzio and his critique as it was always fair without being over the top and that is the way I hope this competition carries on.

Sorry it's taken me a while, I'm a victim of the snow in the SE (even though we've got it here too!) a friend flying out of Gatwick had her flight cancelled, she had a connecting one from Manchester so now she's got a replacement one which flies direct from here tomorrow. It's unbelievably cold here tonight they're forecasting something like -7 (ouch).

I would have voted for Andy (beauxreflets) for his creativity and technique, the fact that it not only fitted the brief, but also the season, with a little more work I'm sure it could have graced the front of a Christmas card.

Thank you for your kind comments Flake. It was all a bit rushed and the idea to 'light paint' was that of my other son.

Very cold and snowy here too - Took pics of the ponies playing in it, and got some nice shots I hope (will down load them tonight) - Just hope I can come up with a good reflection shot tomorrow or Sunday.

Yes I have to agree an excellent choice, I have tried light painting in the past but it never works for me, I blame my assistants, she is only 1 1\2 years old so instructions never seem to get followed very well

Well I voted vor Bob. His sports photos are so spot on, and there was certainly plenty of motion. I love the expression on the chap's face as he runs with the ball.

The motion is certainly well portrayed, could maybe have been a little more. Too little traffic for once, maybe

There's a lot of emotion in the picture, the musician looks like he/she might be in a trance sort of alà Hendrix. I like the technique showing the movement, but the composition could have been better, as already mentioned above.

I certainly try to look at all aspects of the entries before I vote - technique, creativity (which there's plenty of here in this group), fitting the brief. And I'm sure others do too. I can't imagine anyone here saying "oohh, pretty picture" and voting just on the strength of that.

We shouldn't take things to seriously - been said before The main thing is getting our brains in gear and the feed back afterwards is welcome. (thanks Andy )

For me it's all about the image. Technique is pointless unless you get the picture. The idea, the emotion, the viewers' reaction are what count. Technical ability without vision is an empty chalice. Jazz music is my audio analogue for this - many players are superb technicians but the sounds they make are very far from musical. Just as not all sounds made with a musical instrument are music, then not all images taken with a camera are actually worth a second glance - no matter how well crafted they might be.

You can generally buy technique if by that you mean 'pin' sharp images with accurate colours etc - the more expensive the camera the more it is done for you - but you can't buy imagination or creativity.

Conclusion: I will vote any damned way I please, and I would urge everyone else to do the same. Unless, of course there is a vote that appoints flake as the sole arbiter of excellence.
