How to take good snow shots ?

I think Forseti made a valid point.

Hardly worth going to all that expense - was it !?!!?

My suggestion would be to get a decent compact - one with an auto snowscene setting - believe me - you will get better shots - in particular if you concentrate on the subject and composition more -and leave the camera to worry about exposure.

But if you must play with expensive toys - as Forseti recommends - you will have to do a fair amount of adjustments to meter readings etc etc !?!?!??! - ah well - each to their own.

I hope Santa is good to me - because there is lots of snow out there - and the Olympus Pen E2 - looks the right beast - but - must admit - another somewhat expensive "toy" - but a damn site easier to shoot in the snow with gloves on than those cubersome DSLRs that need all those adjustments etc etc

Wink How To Take Good Snow Shots

JPEGs straight out the camera - in snow - impossible !?!? I think not - provided you have a "snowscene" setting on your camera and Lightroom or similar for making some global adjustments - my trusty, cheap, old Panasonic DMC FZ30 strikes again - as can be seen by these JPEGs which were taken this morning and posted for quickness ( but the camera does capture RAW simultaneously - the best of both worlds).

And NOT a "pudding" or "bird" in sight.

AWAY IN A MANGER

TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

All three "snaps" were taken from the same location - the 2nd one was a close-up of two trees seen in the distance in shot No 3 - no lens change required - no exposure compensation needed - no tripod - just a steady hand - granted the RAW images should be a little better when I have a chance to process them - but not bad - although I say it myself - for JPEG's straight out of a camera in snow with the minimal of assitance from Lightroom .

The sky is blue and is reflected in the snow. If I changed it, it wouldn't be what I saw.

As for Gils images they show an overcast sky.

What a load of "back tracking tosh".

Hardly "overcast" - had my sunglasses on - it was bright and sunny all morning - I was just fortunate enough to have some receding snow clouds as a bacdkrop - look at my shadow in the 3rd one - for further proof - a shadow which I couldn't avoid - more's the pity - as I find it somewhat distracting - never mind - "c'est la vie" - but of course - "If I changed it, it wouldn't be what I saw" ............. "sacre bleu !" l
