That's true Ed, but in the 50's lenses didn't have the multi-coating that they have today and you need to be a bit more careful with them. This is why a lot of togs use UV filters to guard against this possibility.
Personally, I wouldn't spit on a lens (Beatnik69) as it's likely to include bits of your lunch and, as a general rule, hamburger is not a recommended lens cleaning agent.
Very gently brush the surface of the lens with a soft brush (like a camel-hair), then breathe on the affected portion and gently polish with a micro-fibre cloth or a lens tissue. You may need to repeat this operation a few times to get rid of the smudge.
The important thing is to clean it ASAP. Finger prints contain oil which will, in time, eat it's way into the coating and the glass. So, the sooner you get rid of it the better.
