Hi Chris,

Congrates on the xmas present, I hope you know where it's hidden and can play when everyone goes out

Can you let us know what camera you have got and what lens as this will aid in the suggestions given.

I would say for landscapes a tripod is a must, I was on a budget and brought a £40 one for commet of all places thats great for my needs. Also depending on what lens you have you may want a wide angle but this will probably be down the line.

Depends on your actions shoots are they in/out doors during the day etc. as this may effect a whether a flash is needed or a nice fast lens (prices can be expensive)

Bags are a good by and spend some time getting the right one as these seemed the thing people change the most.

Memory Cards and some filters (c.Poloriser for the landscapes) 7 day shop for good prices.

I am sure there are other things I have forgot but let us know what kit your getting to help.

Circular poloriser for the 18-55 from 7 dya shop would be a good investment and maybe UV filters as well. Two schools of thought whether they are worth it or not but I use them as advice I got was 'much cheaper to replace a scratched UV Filter than a scratched lens' see link below.

With regards the Flash IMO it is probably not worth it on those styles of photography as you are limited on how close you can get to the action, I would say saving up for a fast lens of F2.8 but this is expensive. I am rugby player and take shots when can't play (body always seem in bits the pains of a prop!) I have a minolta 70-210 fixed f4 which is fast enough although always want a bit longer/bit faster (welcome to lens lust)

Other than that use what you've got learn the camera and you'll find out whats missing in your kit.

Tom

There are loads of third party flashes out there which aren't massively expensive but, as Tom said, it's not the most important thing you'll need. Check out Nissin for good cheap flashes though.

A remote release isn't essential for sports photos at all. I would suggest a tripod - especially for landscapes. It can really make life easier, especially for longer exposures in poor light. A tripod is also a must if you want to try your hand at HDR.

High Dynamic Range

A process by which you take several exposures of the same scene, some under- and some over- exposed, and combine them digitally to enable you to capture more dynamic range, tone and colour.

My tutorial and FAQs on HDR

I seem to be missing something as I can't see anything like tripods for sale. Just a site for a "strategic consultancy" company...?
