March theme is Panning.

Panning is a technique where you pan your camera along in time with a moving subject and hopefully end up getting a sharp subject but a blurred background.

Hmmmm, we had this before and I just couldn't get into it. Will not let that put me off though and will give it a try.

Chris. Have you set up your camera for back button focusing?

Although panning is a technique I've never tried apart from shooting aircraft or BIFs.
Of course an high shutter speed is used in this case and back button focusing is a big help,

Obviously to get background blur a 1/20-1/60 sec will be required, so this months comp will be something new for me.

Not done this for a while - and don't think I'll get much opportunity at what I'm shooting this weekend (gigs)!

I usually find it takes about an hour to get the hang of it - I live near Silverstone so occasionally pop down there, but won't get time this weekend.

I live near to Cadwell Park, and also not to far away from the beach racing at Mablethorpe (motorbikes), but the weather forecast is dreadful for this weekend. No decent roads so unable to snap a few motorists traveling at decent speeds. May have to make do with a speeding tractor

Live in hope for decent weather in two weeks time when I'll get another opportunity.

Never heard of back button focusing. I will look into this

The one on back button focusing describes how to set it up and use.

What it does is enable you to continuously focus when the camera is set to Servo focus by pressing and holding using your thumb on whichever button you set on the back of the camera.

Depending on how you set up the camera this will remove focusing from the shutter button, so needs to be set to one of your custom setting. I use C3 so I can switch to back button without actually looking at the dial.

No doubt the video will be more specific.
Back button focusing is a real boon when shooting fast moving jets or birds inflight and is well worth getting to grips with and I'm shure will also be a major benefit when panning.
