potential gig photography

my friend is in a (pub covers) band and we are hoping to go and see them at the weekend and i'm thinking of taking my camera for some shots. lighting is unknown, but i'd imagine (based on previous times we've seen them) pretty dark with some coloured lights/white spotlights. this is what i have:

canon 1100D
EFS 17-55 2.8 IS USM
EF 50mm 1.8
Tamron 70-300 (not the stabilised one, and to be honest, not much cop...)
no external flash

any hints at all as to what my best bet will be to get some remotely acceptable shots? i'm thinking the 17-55 will give me the best options (and it's by far my best lens).

Hi Alex

I did some gig photography a while ago in poorly lit venue.
As a result the only lens I used was my 50mm f1.8 which did a pretty good job. You've got that lens so that should be a good one to use.
Your 17-55 f2.8 should be good too depending on the light.

You'll prob need to ramp the ISO up too.

When I did my gig I asked the band what they wanted but they gave me a free reign to do what I wanted.
Try to be creative and get some good, interesting shots.

Good luck.

I think you've done a pretty good job there Alex.
If you were anything like me when I did my first gig you were probably experimenting with different settings.
Some look well lit and others look as though the light was not quite as good. You should be pleased with your first effort.
Do you think you will do any more gigs?

Either of you want to post some Band pics on my http://guitaristguild.com site? There's a section in the forum for Band Photos.

I'll have a look on my hard drive Mick and see if ive got any suitable ones. It may take a while though, broadband is down at the mOmment and Orange are dragging their heels. iPhone is ok to a point but not great.

I used to play the guitar (very badly) and want to have some lessons but don't have much spare time at the moment.

Thanks Chris, that would be great.

Orange, yep, I use them myself, they're not the quickest when it comes to sorting things, and phoning support is normally a bad experience,

I think that over the last 3 days I've spent nearly 4 hours on the phone to Orange!
At least we got a brand new modem, even though if wasn't a modem problem.

I was using a Livebox which wasn't bad, but asked them for a brightbox, that's been really good tbh. And very easy to set up. Just plug in and off you go. Has your login details already pre set. And much smaller than the livebox to which is good.
