Where did all the EOS 5D Mk I go?

What happened to all the old stock of EOS 5D Mark 1 that must have been knocking around? I don't feel the need to upgrade to a MKII or similar, but would love to pick up a new bargain 5D MKI, but there just don't seem to be any about. What happens to stock of all the old models that Canon supersede with their quarterly releases - do Canon buy them back from the retailers?

Nice to see the new site up and running, and I hope it's as much fun as the old DC MAG used to be - I shall be keeping my eyes open for the weekly competitions.

I thought they were still being advertised widely in the mags?? Personally, I think you'd be mad to buy a"bargain" Mk1 now unless it's REALLY cheap, it's a great camera but its specs and capabilities have been way WAY exceeded by the latest offerings for much less money. I am considering a Mk2 myself but for the money versus performance the 50D is arguably a strong contender against THAT, let alone the Mk1!!... And now there's the 7D??
I know none of these are full-frame.... but for the features, low light performance and rave reviews of these cameras, you'd have to have a really, really, really overpowering desire for full-frame to choose an albeit excellent but now "old" and outdated 5D Mk1.
Just remember, if you find a Mk1 it is still pretty expensive and its really old NOW... so what will it be in another 5 years time?? I have a couple of 20D's, they were state of the art when I bought them, but they've been superseded three times since... and there's probably more to come!!
If you really want "bang for your buck" and you want an quality old-ish body for a bargain... have you considered a used (warrantied) 1D?

Cheers,
Simon.

All gone to be melted down and turned into knives - well it's the only way they will cut the mustard!

Check out the second-hand market and Canon dealers on Ebay.

Not as much fun as the old DCM site.

If you want full frame relatively cheaply, then the 5D is still a fantastic camera and very good value. A 1D is very nice, but the only full frame ones are the 1DsMkII and MkIII - the II will set you back about £1.5K.

Lets also not forget that the 5D is still a very low noise camera. ISO 1600 is very good and careful use of 3200 can give very good results, particularly in print.

I still have mine and wouldn't part with it. Blimey, I just got rid of all the manufacturers dust and dirt, so now my sensor stays free from bunnies for months without the need for cleaning. The 5d deserves its 'classic' status in my view, and is the best digital camera I have owned. Besides, the wife wouldn't let me change it anyway.

If you want full frame, then you can not compare it to a crop. Period. I don't care how good a crop it is, its not full frame.

Like Keith I too still have my 5D Mk1 - and wouldn't part with it. It might be old, but it has only just been outclassed. Just.

I use mine as much as my MkIII - two different cameras that are best at different things. Both do everything, just one does some things better than the other.

If you do still want one, then they come up on the Canon Ebay shop every now and then still. And they come with 12months warranty.
