I've recently found that the best lighting (for my weekend entered dessert and rolo shots) is natural lighting, no flash was used in either of them. I did use a couple of reflectors, but kitchen foil would work just as well .

I quite like the videos of Phillip McCordall, this youtube clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpHIjQZmSwI shows how to set up a still life without pro kit, other than a camera and tripod.

That's why women have smaller feet than men, so they can get closer to the sink, washer, cooker.......

Won't need much explaining she always complained she wanted a bigger kitchen which is part of the reason we moved house last year!

I am also thinking the dog could be a good option as being 50% labrador where the is food there is the dog
