Just started and need some advice!

Hello,
I've just brought a Canon EOS 600d, and I have to admit I haven't really got a clue what I'm doing.

I have started buying monthly photo magazines, in the hope I can learn from them, I am also reading through the treads on here.

I hope to take pictures of models, landscapes and my family, but at the moment it feels like I've just got an expensive point and shoot camera!

We all started here.
It can take a bit of time to make progress, but stick with it and you will. Photography is a bit like golf in some respects, you can spend hours practising, and just when you think you're getting to grips with it it all goes wrong!

There are loads of good tutorials and advice pages on the Internet, but its also really important to read the manual.
The home page on this site also has plenty of tutorials so may be worth a look.

Hi, Join a camera club, don't be intimidated by all their equipment, ASK for help, purchase photoplus mag on a regular basis, & if possible take a photo course at a local adult education.

Hello Steve,

The best thing you could do is to get out and take pictures. I was told by one friend that you needed to take 10,000 pictures before you really started to understand your camera. Personally, I think he was off by a factor of 3.

Also you need to read your camera manual as well . I remember the first thing I did after reading my camera manual was to learn my camera's "P mode". Then after I became familiar with it, I moved to the "A Mode" and so on and so forth. Now, I am using the "M mode", or the manual mode of my camera.... Surely it will take time. Just like Frank said, shoot lots and lots of photos!!

hi some good advice above i see you are in cheshire so go to the lancashire and cheshire photographic union they give a list of all the clubs in the area.
best advice is take lots of pictures in AV TV and manual modes you will learn from your successes and failures all your settings are in the exif data so you can easily check what was right or wrong

After the manual and Magazines, I personally found the Canon EOS Rebel Book "From Snapshots to Great Shots" by Jeff Revell and excellent learning and reference book. Wasn't too bad a price on Amazon. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-EOS-Re...9565752&sr=8-4
