What camera have you got? If possibel look at the AIS Nikon lenses, as these work with both DX and FX cameras and most where well made.

I have a D7000 (D90 replacement) and use 24-85mm f2.8 D Nikkor lenswhich works well for me as an everyday lens living in the city. The 35mm 1.8 is a cracker though.

In that case you can use all the AIS lenses, which are very well made and usually cheaper than the lastest versions.

The 16-85mm is a cracking lens for the money - incredibly sharp.
