Welcome to the forum, Osiris.
When you were in Jessops looking at both these cameras, what made you choose the Nikon over the Canon at the time? Something must have made you like the Nikon more than the Canon for you to come to a decision, despite you still wrestling with your conscience.
You see these are both very fine entry level DSLR cameras, equally capable of taking superb images once you know how. The major differences though are the menu systems and the camera layout. So when you were trying them in the shop did you prefer the menu or how the controls were laid out on the Nikon over the Canon. You made reference to the fact you felt the Canon looked cheap and plasticy and felt that way to the touch. Is this what put you off the Canon initially?
Buying a camera is a very personal decision because what suits your requirements will not suit the next persons needs. So when you choose a camera you need to have a clear idea of what features are going to be of real benefit to you and look for cameras that have those features. Narrow your choice down by the budget you have to spend and then go and try these cameras to see which one you like the most. There may not be a lot of difference between them on a technical level, but you will find one you prefer based on how easy you find it to use.
If you felt you were pressured by the saleperson into choosing the Nikon over the Canon then you may have good reason to take it back and swap it for another model, but if you feel that you arrived at your decision without any undue influence then the Nikon probably is the camera for you.
