Raw edit software

Just found out that the pictures taken in raw on my new D700 are not supported by my rawshooter 2006 software. Not wanting to give Mr nikon another £100 or so is there any cheaper versions out there I can use, mostly for fill light and white balance correction. Have downloaded a trial of lightroom but it doesnt work with windows xp appparently.

Windows XP? You are trying to work on the cheap, aren't you? Rawshooter formed the basis of Lightroom's raw processing, iirc.

Have you tried Nikon's free View NX 2?

As Chris said the version of ViewNX that would have come with the camera should work.

Chris is quite right ViewNX will work on your RAW files but its limitations are very evident in the resizing of the image in the respect that they are set to precise sizes - no re-sizing between them
I downloaded the trial version of CaptureNX but without any useful documentation/tuition information it's as user friendly as a bag of angry ratlesnakes.
I'm in the same position as you, I want to start shooting RAW more and Lightroom 4 seems to be where the wise money is to be spent, but with a computer running on XP and slow RAM it's going to be an expensive exersise to consider - welcome to the world of digital photography, it's great fun but wallet busting

I shoot in RAW with my Nikon D7000 and use cyberlink photodirector 2011 to edit them.
It was for free with the DC magazine a while ago.

Hi Goon,

I'm relevetively new to photography so take my suggestion with a pinch of salt, but as a Linux user I have spent a very long time researching alterntive editors to Photoshop Elements and Lightroom which are massively popular because of their ease of use. (My girlfriend uses LR on the Mac so I'm fairly familiar with this to).

If you are happy to spend a little money I'd recommend Corel's Aftershot Pro, its very nice, quicker than LR, non-destructive and supports layers when editing your pictures. It will cost you around £60 on Amazon UK.

If you are after something free you can try Darktable, but I am not sure what the status is for supporting Windows (it might have been stopped). It is an excellent piece of software for raw editing, and is free while being regularly updated. I rate this over GIMP+UFraw as it is specific to the needs. GIMP is great but I rarely need it after use one of these two I've linked above.

Regards,
Rob
