I think my mistake with bracketing, is I just set my camera up to take three exposures - one stop under, one stop over and one normally exposed. When what I should be doing (especially if there is sky involved) is take an exposure reading of the sky and then another reading of the foreground, and then set the bracketing accordingly.

Does that sound right?

In my (very limited) experience, one stop difference isnt enough, I did 2 stops. Gave more contrast

Thanks Chris, I'll give it a whirl and report back. I think I might have to adjust the exposure compensation (the central marker in the Expo.comp./AEB) to the left or right as well, depending on the brightness of the scene.

I'm embarrassed to admit that my camera has just clicked over to reset the image counter, for the second time. So I've taken over 20,000 photos in the three years I've had my camera, and I've not got a lot to show for it. Over Christmas, I thought, rather than keeping all my rubbish shots to myself, I'd try to take part in the competitions a bit more and share my efforts with the kind folk on here.

All my HDR images are done -1, 1. & +1 and I have had no troubles with that, tripod I feel is a must.
I believe that the number of shots does not matter and you may need more than 3 to capture the full dynamic range.
Also checking the histogram of each picture will help.

I never use the histogram. maybe its something I should start to do.
