Exif Data

Tried to enter a photo on the Nikon In-frame Competition site but the file would not upload due to 'valid exif data missing' but uploads to FlickR and other sites.

Not sure how this has come about but maybe due to Windows 7 Live Gallery editing software?

Are you able to read the EXIF data? I have a few editors and one of them doesn't save that data. And if I heard correctly, Nikon won't accept submissions without the data.

most photo sites will accept images without the Exif. However if you're entering a 'serious' competition Exif could be required.
In Photoshop if you save for web the Exif will be stripped out, but saving as "Save As" will keep Exif intact. Check the software you are using as most serious editors will give you the option to retain/remove Exif.

Hi Harry,

Something I only found out last week. In Photoshop, when you 'save for web and devices', you get a pop up window where you can choose the image quality, size etc. There is also a drop down in the middle of the right hand side titled Metadada. By default this seems to be set to 'none' but you can change it to Copywrite, Copywrite and Contact Info, All except Camera Info or All. If you keep the default at none, Photoshop will strip all Exif data from your image, which is what it was doing for me, now I set it to 'All' and manage to keep all my Exif data intact.

Apparently this is happening to somebody else, and the problem centers around the EXIF data being stripped. When it does that, a particular Nikon competition won't recognize the camera as a Nikon, and refuses the upload to the website.

Thanks Nick, something I'd not noticed, but then again in all the 12 years of using digital & photoshop I've never used "Save for Web" always use "Save as"

Oh. I also realised it may be because the photos were stitched as I just checked various jpg properties details and straight shots contained all the information, stitched ones didn't.

I don't think stitching multiple images together satisfies the competition's 'photo taken with a Nikon' requirement, even if all were taken with a Nikon the end result was not. Maybe that's just me, but you'll have to convince them (initially via EXIF data, just to have a chance) that it was taken with a Nikon. I'm pretty sure it's possible to plant some exif data into an image with none. Sorry, but I'm not saying how.

I joined a Flickr 'Point and Shoot' group, and some folks are uploading photos that were done with DLSRs. I uploaded a couple of photos to the group, done with my P&S camera, and the EXIF data is used to show the make and model of camera used. The make and model are shown right there at the side of the photo, so it can be immediately seen if somebody is cheating. Those photos get deleted.

There is a program with which you can add EXIF date to a photo, but you have to pay for it. I don't know that it's worth it for entering a competition.
