I am not sure what you mean by "most" but I see the question asked, a lot, on how to smooth out water. Everyone has their tastes and they should respect other people's opinions regardless. As long as you were not attacking it blindly (that sucks, sort of thing), but it seems you were giving a reason. That is good.

Here I would have moderated the thread and got rid of the petty bickering, but then again I would avoid that unless it was going way off topic or there were personal attacks. That does not happen often here. Most of our moderating is getting rid of spam messages that sneak in.

In the past, now distant past, we used to have a problem with a person here who often gave negative comments. He was also not nice about it, and used insulting language.
I wonder if it was the same person who was on another photo forum I had to leave?

I should have qualified my "most" statement by saying most of us who have been around for a few years... would have learned about smoothing out water. But then again, it's an assumption that most of us old timers know how to do it.

My exact words on the photo were: "The water is a bit too milky for my taste." The person who posted the photo didn't have a problem with my comment. It was another member who popped in from time to time, rarely posted a photo, but has an "expert" opinion on everything. I found out, later, that several members had blocked him before I joined the forum. I did try to reason, nicely, with him but whatever I said was wrong.

I never attack somebody's work because I don't want to discourage anyone. If I offer any criticism at all, it's constructive.

Those people are just looking to disagree. There is usually no point in trying to reason with them.

It's interesting how this problem still exists here. A shame too.
I remember the 'old' DCM site. It was always busy with numerous people getting stuck in and contributing.
Now the site in general is very quiet. The comps thread is reasonably busy but not so the rest of the site.

I guess different people want different things from the site; some like the comps, some like to seek/give advice, some like to post photos for critique.

I really like the site and try, where I can, to get involved in different areas. I want the site to work, hopefully it will. I just wish people would get more involved.

I know what you mean Jediboy/Chris. It can be pretty disappointing to visit this forum and find that nothing much has been added. I just assumed that as DCW and Future's focus seems to be on Facebook (which I don't have) the party must be going on over there.

Perhaps, as you say, if "people would get more involved", it will become busier, but I think we've been saying that for a couple of years now and I don't think it's going to change much.

I've tried to be more active on here since the New Year, (I blame Dave/Wavemachine for his 366 and encouraging me to do a 52), but even I'm getting a little fed up of the site, in particular the continuance of the poor gallery and the seaming lack of interest from DCW staff. But I'll continue to do my best, but if I'm the last to leave, I'll try to remember to turn out the lights

Nick

Glad to see this thread is still gaining interest. I haven't been as active as usual due to personal problems and I have also joined a couple of other sites so try to divide time between them all. This is by far my favourite though.

It is the apparent lack of interest by the staff that bothers me the most. I check to see who is on the site every day (in the forums anyway) to look for spammers and I have yet to see any staff. I thought it would change when they hired a community editor but apparently she is just for Facebook and Twitter. I would be focusing the majority of my attention my own site, but perhaps there is a business case for not doing so.

Thank you.

What forum members need to remember is that we learn from others whether they are experienced or new (you tell us what you like or dont) we learn from your opinion good or bad we try different things because of the comments we receive. Personally I love bad feedback because I learn from it (as long as its not just rude for the sake of it) if I post a photo thats crap tell me its crap but tell me why....
