How rude!

I am quite annoyed at how rude some of the forum members here can be in that they rarely if ever, comment on peoples posts, critique images and generally don't join in.

The number of threads started that not one person has replied to is unreal. It's the members that make a forum and I think if you aint gonna bother...THEN DON"T BOTHER!!!!

I know what you mean the number of times myself and others have gone to a great deal of effort to reply to someones post never to have a response I have lost count.

However I do think there is some great interaction on the forum although not so much lately for some reason, personally I don't seem to have a lot of time of late (partly due to this pesky 366 I started in January only 72 shots remaining) but hopefully once the cold winter nights set in there will be more activity.

Personally I still feel my photography is quite infant and don't feel fully comfortable with providing critique in the critique threads, I have good camera control (which is 10-20% of it) but my composition still needs a lot of work. So I leave the critique threads to the experts in most cases. Although having said that I do have an opinion so will make more effort

Opinions is what it's all about - imagine an art or photography exhibition..what would happen if the only people who attended were experts?

True and even experts have strong differing opinions.

I have attended courses with 3 pro photographers, 2 of them insisted the only way to get evenly exposed images at sunrise/sunset was to use graduated filters (Lee's at that) and the 3rd uses bracketing and finds graduated filters a pain. Funnily enough after meesing around with filters I am in love with bracketing using a PP technique that takes minutes.

Let me be the first newb to chip in then at risk of getting flamed...

I use around 10 forums for various interests and have done for a number of years, this is the first photography forum I have joined and I have not done an intro post ( my bad) didn't find an area easily to enter a newbie post ( but as an experienced forum user no big deal to me) which always helps break the ice.

I have dropped two posts in already, no reply or comments... I have done a third post and I get a message saying waits to be approved by a moderator?? I understand that there is an attempt to block spammers, but where is my third post, nowhere to be seen?

May I suggest some one looks into making the site a bit more user friendly...

Will I stick around, maybe if I can get some rapport with other forum members before I get fed up of this awkward set up and locate some where else more user friendly.

Hello all by the way I am Jim from Middlesex new to photography although I dabbled a bit when I was younger but the hobby was too expensive for me. I have a Sony NEX-5N with 18-55 & 55-210.

Hoping to stick around and rack up 5,000 + posts learn a hell of a lot from those of you more experienced peeps happy to share and eventually make a contribution of my own over time. hey might even get to meet some of you too.

I generally don't post in critique threads simply because I do have opinions and (I think) a sharp eye. I normally look at comments posted and wonder why no-one points out the obvious faults, makes the obvious comments and so on. I have been told (repeatedly on another forum) that my standards are inappropriate, my language insulting and my demeanour arrogant. Hence I don't bother giving opinions on anything.

I might sometimes give in to temptation and post if it's pure a matter of fact that can't easily be disputed, but not otherwise.

Take this as an exception to my rule.

The most annoying thing is someone posting, asking a question and then never replying after you answer it. A quick thanks is all that is needed. It makes people feel appreciated.

Opinions will vary and sometimes people will be offended even by very good constructive criticism. Recently our camera club had an open forum where members brought in prints and others reviewed them. This was a blind review, they did not know who the photographer was. The opinions were much more honest. One thing I noticed the senior members do, aside from one person who actually referred to one of mine as "one of the bad ones", give critique in a formula. "I see what you were doing here (or I like this) but it could be much better if..." . I see the followed a lot online as well. Start by stating it is not all bad, and then how to improve it.

Since some people will get offended no matter what, many people do not want to give any criticism. However if it is given in a nice friendly manner, then usually this is not the case.

In the past, now distant past, we used to have a problem with a person here who often gave negative comments. He was also not nice about it, and used insulting language. This was not thin skinned people complaining, I just took a look now but it seems we had deleted all of those posts or I would quote one.

So that comes back to opinions. Everyone has one, not everyone has to give one. However the more that do, the better the site is.

I'm not commenting on photo's neither.
I do look at them and I do read comments others made, so I can learn from it.

I'm not into photography for very long, and I'm not able to take lessons (need my time for my job and my kids).

2nd thing is, English is even my first, yet my 2nd language, so I'm not always sure how to say what I think...

I will do give comments on pictures when I'm really sure of what I'm saying.
Meanwhile, I hope that others wil do.

If you can tolerate no criticism about your work, than just don't post your pictures, and keep doing your thing like you do now (good or bad)
