For me it would be long enough to capture movement etc that you wouldn't normally.

can someone tell me how long a "long exposure" would be? 1s or 1/50s or higher?

Yes but what's 'normal'? If the rules stated no faster than 1 second you know where to go from. 1/60th in motorsport is slow for example (generally speaking!) but not for other subjects.

I think we are all getting too hung up on how long a long exposure is. Its the 'spirit' of the theme thats important. Its also how each individual interperates the theme. There are no 'rules' re the length of the exposure, as its dependent upon the theme. Star trails for example require a much longer exposure than you would need to capture a light trail from, say, car headlights.

Lets use our imagination and initiative and go with how we all personally percieve a long exposure. Its then up to the voters. And remember, we have till the end of the month to take, post, receive feedback, improve then enter.

I find if I expose myself too long, my man parts get cold

(I know at least one other person thought of this!)

"Long exposure" is somewhat relative. As mentioned, in motorsports it is very different than what a landscape would use.

How about the standard be that there has to be motion blur of some sort in it?

I don't entirely disagree with you DD, however, I do think there needs to be 'rules' so you can have guidelines and take your initiative from that. I think donoreo has the right idea "motion blur of some sort". It is up to Jediboy though surely to stipulate, that's the winner's prerogative and responsibility.

Not all pictures with long exposure have a motion blur. Look at my entry on the nighttime theme. There is a motion of the bus, true, but without the bus passing, I still needed a long exposure if I didn't want to have a "all black" landscape.

Yes, I agree with you it doesn't but that was just another example. Without complicating things I think the theme setter needs to define 'Long Exposure' as so far it's not clear.

Yeps, I understand that. How long do you think 'long exposure' needs to be? What do others think?
