Unhappy RAW versus jpg

I have recently changed from shooting on auto to manual. All my RAW images with large areas of colour (e.g. blue sky) have blobs of darker colour in them. When I shoot the same image in auto mode (jpg) these do not appear. Can anyone tell me how to avoid these or what to do to stop them as many of my shots are rendered useless by this phenomenon.

Welcome to the Forum, Macca.

You've got at least 2 different changes here - the change from Auto to Manual, and the change from JPEG to RAW. If in manual mode you're selecting a small aperture (f/22, say) that can cause sensor dust spots to show up. If that's not the problem, it may be something in the RAW conversion that's generating the artefacts.

Try shooting Manual with RAW+JPEG, and comparing the images side by side.

Post an image with the problem and we might be able to give better advice.

Welcome

As Chris has said if you can post the affected images we stand a better chance of getting to the bottom of your problem .

First, you need to upload it somewhere. Flickr, maybe, or to the gallery here. Then, you link to it using the icon that looks like a yellow postcard 3rd from right in the toolbar that's there when you're posting. Get the URL from the place where you uploaded the image.

Raw with artefacts

I had to convert the image to a jpg as Flickr would not accept my raw images as valid. It still shows the artefacts though.

No one will take RAW files. That photo is very small. From what I can see in the sky it looks like dust spots on your sensor.

Yes,, I think it's dust as well. Nothing to do with RAW. Your choice of aperture in Manual mode has emphasised these marks on your sensor. A larger picture, or access to it at flickr, with EXIF data would have helped more.
