Camera manual only on disk

I’ve just bought a Canon G11 (thanks to those who answered my query about the camera in an earlier thread). It’s a nice compact but the owner’s manual is only on disk, which you have to download to your computer. This makes it hard to refer to when I am out taking pictures – or trying to read the manual in bed! Previous Canon cameras I have bought (40D, 20D and 300D) have all come with a printed, book version of the owner’s manual, which is far better, both for familiarising yourself with the controls and for swotting up on the camera’s operation. Do any other manufacturer’s scrimp in this way, by not providing a printed manual? Anyone know how to get hold of one? I’m going to try to contact Canon and see what they say.

Canon always were tight on paper. Compare the Canon book for the 5D to the Nikon book for the D90. Mind you Casio book was miserable , but when you download the book and print it out it is fantastic.

I dont think Canon are scrimping by not providing a manual or being tight on paper, Canon are responsible manufactures reducing waste by no provided a printed manual.

....Come on we are all need to reduce are carbon footprint and most cameras spent there time stuck in auto mode .

The manual for the Nikon D60 is superb. Not only teaching you how to use the camera but also techniques along the way. I use it as a ready to pick up reference book, so always have it close at hand. I would not buy a camera that did not come with a paper manual.

This must be a recent thing. I Have a G6 and that came with a manual. Also recently purchased an Ixus 100 for my wife and that comes with a user manual.
Seems odd that a G11 which costs a lot more than an Ixus 100 does not come with a manual.

My Powershot S3 IS bought about 3 years ago had the manual on a disc and no paper copy so it's not that recent!

Possibly. Olympus and Nikon both supplied me with paper manuals.

Tezzy - if you've not already found a solution to the problem you might want to consider contacting EOS magazine. I notice from their web site that they do indeed provide (read sell) printed 'advanced guides' as well as the original PDF guides although at this time the list only appears to go up to the G10. Might be worth contacting them and enquiring as to when they expect the G11 to be added to the list.
