Industrial sunset

I took this on the site of the old Wearmouth Colliery, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. The Stadium of Light is built there now and the Colliery Wheel outside the reception area is a stark reminder of the days gone by and the history of Wearside.

The crane in the background to the right, is a familiar sight and also a reminder of the old ship building days, but instead of using the cranes to build the ships, they now build the actual cranes.

I hope you like it as I do, and I would appreciate some critique (both good and bad)

Really nice image Chris , love the layers of colour in the sky and the band of cloud .

The only bit of critique that I have is that I would of preferred a clearer view of the crane , the plant infront of it is just a bit too much but other than that it's a really great image .

Thanks mark. The plant was a rather huge bush and s a f c may have had a few words had i been spotted trimming it..lol......i tried moving left right and higher but the composition didnt work...

I too love the layers of colour in the sky - I find the overall tone very relaxing.

I worked in Seaham for three months back in the mid-90s just after the last pit closed. It's sad to think all that has long gone but at least they are trying to preserve some of the heritage of the area.

Great shot Chris, great colours I agree with the others I think I would prefer it with a slightly tighter crop to the left so the wheel is a quarter circle but that is just my personal preference.

Yes the crane would benefit being bigger and I found the church and tree between the bottom right spokes distracting.

How would I make the crane bigger when thats how far away it was? Not sure I understand. I'm not sure photoshopping it bigger is my thing..I still prefer to have a photo 'real'. As for the church, I liked it there andactually angled the shot so it was placed in the gap.

However, I appreciate your critique however, and sometimes its down to a matter of personal taste..

Your crop is an interesting thought and I cam see what you mean immediately. I feel a bit sad asking you guys for critique in the other thread, but this is how we learn and only Mark had replied and I really needed your thoughts on this shot.

A very striking image, that has been handled very well.

If it was my image I would flip it horizontally & crop some of the black away from the bottom. My eyes are being drawn to the black parts, cropping would reduce the distraction & I think give it better balance.

Flipping the image would work from me because I tend to look at an image from left to right, the intrest in your shot is on the left. If flipped you would look at the horizon and sky first and then your eye would finish on the wheel.

Could be worth a try.
