Camera Change a challenge??

Hi all,

I am looking to change my camera to full frame, but I have a huge dilema.

I currently use a Canon EOS 50D which is good, but have decided I want to go full frame.

Now my choices are an EOS 1d mk2 N, a 1d mk3 (I know there is a slight crop of 1.3) or an EOS 5d mk2. The 5D mk2 is currently a little pricey still in comparison to the others, but would it be considered a better camera than a full blown Pro camera? The reason I ask this is there is a 1d mk3 on ebay being sold, the reason is to upgrade to the 5D mk2?

I know the 5D is Digic 4, but the 1d mk3 is dual digic 3. I don’t need massive lowlight capability, mainly wanting the camera for landscape/cityscape, wildlife, macro, flowers and still life with a little bit of sport (but very rarely).

If I have the 5d mk2, I’ll will need the battery grip also.

lenses will be 17 - 40 f4L, 24-105 f4L, 100 f2.8, Sigma 150-500 f5.6-6.5 (looking to change).

So just a few things to think about!!!

To answer the first question, the 5D MkII is considered a "full blown Pro camera". but your confusion is clear, but not what you are confused about.

I would get a 5D over a 1D Mk III

Sorry, My confusion is which would be the best to buy, the 1d mk2 N, 1d mk3 or 5d mk2.

This may help you, bottom line is the the 5D Mark II is 3 years newer tech than the 1D Mark III.

It has to be the 5dmk2 as above its newer and should start to drop in in price a bit

The 5D mk 2 would be very nice thank you very much, I wish I could afford it, even though the prices will come down!!

I understand the issue of the 5D MK2 is 3 yrs newer, but what about the fact that the 1D MK3 has Dual digic 3 processors, more focus points with more cross type, more metering zones etc. Does that not then put it on an even keel, even though it’s older? Bit like technology being passed down from F1 to road cars over time!!??

I’ll put my question another way then.

Would the 1d MK3 be a massive step up from my 50D. I think I know the answer already due to the different nature of them. I know the 5D MK2 would be, except it seem to have the same number of focus points and metering zones??!!

Be interested to hear opinions.....

Canon 1D Mkiii..... 21Mp, full-frame (and no crop factor - it's the 1D Mk2N that has the smaller sensor, with the 1.3x crop factor) (the link is to a "1Ds Mk3" - note the small 's'..... if that's what you're looking at - it makes a big difference!). the link doesn't mention the onboard processor but you say it's Digic3 - I can't think it will make a lot of difference, particularly as you mentioned low-light photography (and high ISO) isn't a major factor. US$3.5 on Amazon.

Canon 5D Mk2... 21Mp, full-frame (no crop factor) Digic4. US$2 - 3k on Amazon.

If it's between those two, the 5D Mk2 is the better buy - not counting any further upgrades you might need (like battery grip).

Dont just read on them, go into a store and handle them, see which one fits you, see which one has controls that make the most sense to you....consider the lens line up..consider what type of photography you want to do....everyone has their opinions on the best camera(s)...but YOU will be the one using whatever it is you wind up with.
