RGB or sRGB

FIrst post new to proper photography.
I have Purchased a Canon Eos 550D. I am currently reading the magazine, "The Complete Canon SLR Handbook" It is very informative but I have come across a contradiction (I think)
On p13 Top Tips number 5, Features you can forget. Tip 5 Adobe RGB states. The Adobe RGB colour space isn't always printer friendly, so stick to sRGB if you want great looking prints every time.
YET.
on p53 Smarter set up. tip 10 states, Adobe RGB blar blar blar, YOU WILL RECORD A WIDER RANGE OF COLOURS IF YOU SET IT TO THE ADOBE RGB SETTING. THIS GIVES BETTER PRINTING RESULTS.
Could some one please advise me.

sRGB is great for viewing on screen. Adobe RGB is great for printing. So I hear. However, there are different opinions.

I noticed that one of the statements in the petapixel article says it doesn't matter what colour space you set in the camera as you can change it after in the raw conversion (assuming you shot raw in the first instance). However, I'm not sure you can specify the colour space in all conversion software can you? I can in Adobe Camera Raw and CS4 but couldn't in the cut down version of ACR in Elements10. I noticed recently that some of my files were embedded with adobe 1998 and not sRGB which I subsequently changed in the 'Workflow Options'

Thanks for the input. I have ACr and Adobe photoshop CS4 along with Elements 9. I will look further into them.
