Adobe Photoshop issue

Hi everyone this is my first post so please go gentle.

I've always used Coral Paintshop Pro XI for my editing and today thought I'd upgrade. I'm soon hoping to upgrade my computer to a Mac and as I was instructed at the store that Coral Paintshop Pro X4 isn't compatible so purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 10. I'm not sure if any of you have converted over but it feels like I'm writing with my other hand. I guess I should give it time to adjust.

There is one issue I can't find the answer to so I thought I would pick your brains.
When editing a photo to black and white and then erasing the layer back to colour I'm having a hard time not being able to use the right click on the mouse to correct the over wipe that I may have made, like I would do on Coral (does that make sense?) The only way I can see I can do this is by going to the top and pushing undo.... I know I can use the magic eraser but I work better in manual mode. Is there an easier way?

It didn't make 100 sense to me. Never used Elements but have Corel and im very big on Adobe Photoshop which is elements with more bells and not so jazzy looking. When you do a black and white conversion in PS you use an adjustment layer so all you need do is turn off the black & white adjustment layer to see the original. Its also good practice to duplicate your first layer (or the layer with the photo in) and then do all the editing to the copy so if you wish to revert back all you have do is turn the layers above the original off.

If your doing it a different way then think about trying to do it this way as non destructive editing will save you hours.

Failing that Hold Ctrl + Alt and keep pressing Z till all your mistakes have gone. This is the keyboard shortcut for undo in PS so should work in elements. If not its hold Ctrl then press Z. The later works in many programs.

Painting on a Layer Mask - that's what you're doing - is, in its basic form, painting black onto the mask (in fact, over the picture while the mask is 'active')......... to swap to white (to correct anything you've over done) give a quick press on the 'X' key.... (D to get Default Black and White in the foreground and background palettes and X to swap them over).

Have no worries about PS Elements 10 - there's lots that it can do and most magazines and websites (including this one) are chock full of tutorials....... however, I'd always recommend a good book and yours would be "Photoshop Elements 10 for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby and Matt Kloskowski. As an alternative, or perhaps supplementary, "PS Elements 10 - The Missing Manual" goes into more depth but can be a little 'drier'.

Many people start out with Elements as a way to get into the full Photoshop, but then find that Elements has all they'd ever need. In fact, while there are a few very good things about Photoshop that will make you envious in the next couple of years (which is what Adobe want you to do) the one thing that really irks me is that Elements has a very inferior Adobe Camera Raw compared to full PS.

I'm still very happy with PS Elements 6!

Ctrl Z is the keyboard shortcut for 'undo last action'.

If, for instance, you had erased something from your photo and then pressed Ctrl Z whatever you had erased would be restored. Pressing Ctrl Z once more will erase the item again. More like a loop action.

In Photoshop it is and maybe Elements but other adobe programs and microsoft programes and other programes its keeps undoing using the history not you last action so no loop.
