5D mk3 computer connection

My brother-in-law just bought a Canon 5d mk3 ( lucky git) as his FIRST DSLR??!!!!!

He came to me to help get everything set up and to show him how it all works. The camera is beautiful by the way. Anyway, we set all that up then he asked how to get the images off the camera onto his mac air, so I said no probs. I loaded the Canon software, took a pic or 2 and then connected the camera. Nothing, nothing at all. Tried manually selecting in EOS Utility, no pictures of that type said the computer. So we read the manual, followed exactly what it said, still nothing!! So I took the memory card out and put it in my card reader, connected that up and boosh straight away, images found and uploaded??!!

Would anyone have any ideas as to why this would happen?

If someone has a point by point guide as to what to do, how the camera should be set up that would be really cool.

Also my MacBook Pro wouldn’t recognise the camera through the Canon software, but then I think mine needs updating as it is from my 50D.

Would it be worth his while buying lightroom? He doesn’t want to do full editing, just cropping and maybe a little saturation etc?

Thanks in advance, loads of stuff I know......

Your software would probably not recognise the camera, but the OS should see something.

It is generally recommended, but I have not seen a full list of reasons why, to use a card reader to transfer. However, if he wants to ever shoot tethered, it will need to see the camera.

Did you look at the manual? I am sure it is in there.

Lightroom is great. Being a non-destructive editor it never changes the original photo. As a result, you do not add a new layer for every small adjustment. I used Elements before, and never do anymore since getting Lightroom. To get the most out of LR, shoot in RAW. I switched to LR mainly for the RAW editing features that Elements did not have (the RAW capabilities in LR are the same as in the full Photoshop).

The software should have recognised the camera, as it was the software that came with the camera. All brand new, opened by me. Which is why I’m baffled as to why it wouldn’t connect!!

I used to use elements until I bought the full photoshop. I have never used lightroom, I was toying with getting it, as it has a better organiser then photoshop, so I am led to believe?!

I tried another cable, that didn’t work. the software must be the latest, as the camera was specially ordered. the 5d mk3 hasn’t been out that long!! My life is made more difficult in that I don’t have the mac air or the hand book or even the camera as they belong to my brother-in-law. I am just trying to get a few clues to try out next time!!!!

Even though you speciffically ordered the camaera I would still go to canons website and download the latest versions as the software can be out of date even though the camera is new

Hi,
Yes we loaded the full package, DPP, EOS Utility, Image Browser etc.

From memory I think the version was 25.1 or something like that?!!

As I said, I’m working blind as I haven’t got the software or Laptop with me as it all belongs to my brother-in-law.

The Eos utility when you click on the camera icon recognises the camera, it just says “no images of that type” when trying to download. What doesn’t happen is the image browser doesn’t click open when you first connect the camera.

I hope this extra info is of some help to you all??
