It's the moon. Of course it looks like the one you posted earlier.

not necessarily it could have been a half moon, anyway if you read the earlier post mark asked for a cropped version to see more detail so i tried but it just looked the same

If you want detail, taken with a D50 and 70/300mm Sigma

This is one I took with my Sigma 18-250 @ 250 to see how much detail I could get with a relatively short and soft lens . Cropped to 100% .

took this one ages ago at 1000mm ( sigma 170 - 500mm + 2x teleconverter )
there's a 100% crop of part of the image in the top left to give you an idea of detail which looks a little soft

Moon shots are one of the few times I shoot off the LCD display and always use a tripod.
Remember the moon is very bright and actually moving very fast.
I will zoom in to 10X on the LCD display while focusing, that way I can see that I have nailed the focus. Using the 10 sec selftimer will allow all of the camera vibrations to settle down before the shutter is actuated. (I use a wireless remote now, but had success using the 10sec timer). By using the LCD display you are locking up the mirror and avoiding mirror slap which will also cause the camera to shake and the picture to be blurry.

full moon last night, and clear skies, so i had a go:

moon 2 by alexharrison101, on Flickr
and

moon 1 by alexharrison101, on Flickr
were the better ones. shot with a (cheap) 300mm lens, on a tripod, using LCD display. 1/1000 and f6.3, manual focus.

some pp to boost contrast and crop. what can i do to make this better (except a better lens ha ha...)? am going to try again when the moon's in a different phase too, to see if i can get more shadow.

Alex,

I'm certainly no expert, but I'd be tempted to start with something like f11 and 1/250. Then see what else can work for you.
