It you want to capture the moment then you have to do the best you can at that time. You could use a blur tool to defocus the background, so your daughter stands out more otherwise, it's not a bad shot.

I used to stress about lighting etc when I was trying to capture my kids and then this year I suddenly realised it had stopped me from taking photos. Now I don't stress and I take loads more pictures and I have some good ones and some bad ones but they are all memories.

I really like this shot, I love her expression and the colour to it. Why blur out the background - it reminds you of where you were and what happened. You captured it and that's the main thing. Our kids dont grow up in studios and when they look back are they going to say mum/dad why didnt you do it strobist style? or just look back fondly and go ah I remember that!

I really like it, it shows how spontaneous a child can be and think it is a lot more than a familly snapshot, I love the processing and with the car in the background almost give it a film set feel. One suggestion is to do some PP and remove the poles and chains from the background which could give it a less show feel.

I agree with the others and it can be easy to get bogged down by getting a shot to show off to everyone with correct lighting, composition nice background etc for me though photography is about capturing the moment as best you can, sometimes you don't get time to compose the shot perfectly as in a blink it is over.

I have lots of photos of my daughter which technically make me cringe however I love those shots as the bring back good memories and make me and familly members smile, those photos are for our familly and not a wider audience. I guess we need to think back to when we use to look at our familly photos, on poor quality poloroids etc how often did I say but dad the skies blown out or why have you broken the rule of thirds

Having said that I have organised a shot with my daughter before now and here are a few, she has always brought an idea in as well which is a fun father daughter thing to do:-

Cheers old boy, the first shot is an investment to put off future boyfriends that way I will avoid having to pay for a wedding
