The trouble with the 120 - 400mm is it's no faster, and fast glass is going to cost more money. You might look at the Sigma 100 - 300mm f/4 which is an often overlooked lens which offers excellent image quality and can be picked up quite cheap off ebay. It should give better results than either the 150 - 500mm or the 120 - 400mm. If you have some serious money to spend there's the 120 - 300mm f/2.8, but it's a bit of a monster in terms of size & weight.
The 100 - 300mm can be used with a 1.4 TC to give a 140 - 420 at f/5.6
For wide angle the Sigma 10 - 20mm and the 12 - 24mm merit some serious consideration, the Canon lens is good but pricey (nothing new there!), however you might want to consider the new Canon 15 - 85mm which has received some good reviews and will give you a great standard zoom which you won't have to change very often, the equivalent FOV is 24 - 135mm a great focal length to have. Currently it's £580 but it's only just been released so expect that to fall, probably to nearer £400
