Mastering Closups

Gday and Hi to all in the forum, this is my first time on any type of forum which goes along with my level of photography experience.

I've recently purchased a new Sony Cybershot DSC-S950 in order to catalogue my diecast model car collection amongst other things. I've been trying to take photographs of rear and front shots of my cars, the very forefront of the shot is nice and clear but the length of the car away from the camera is blurred. I do realise that the Macro mode will cause this.

How can I get an overall close up photograph of the cars at this angle that allows the whole car to be in focus?

Any help would be appreciated.

Mick

With a compact you are often stuck with the settings in camera for a given mode and an aspect of macro close ups is the shallow depth of field you mention. I don`t know the camera but there will no doubt be a range of other settings you can select and it might be worth trying such as a portrait / landscape mode, standing further away and using any zoom you have - I am guessing a 3 or 4 x optical zoom is in this model. Get in some good light using natural light from a window ideally rather than the onboard flash that will cast shadows potentially and use a piece of white / black material to try and show them at their best Best I can offer I am afraid.

Have you heard of a technique called 'Focus Stacking'? Here's a link to a YouTube video explaining it in more detail http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJiEw4VCcYU and if you type in 'Focus Stacking' into Google search it will throw up pages of written and explanatory tutorials. Hope this help a bit with your project.

Focus stacking is only really achievable with a tripod, manual focus lens and / or a set of macro rails, you stand nay chance with an autofocus P&S.

OP: If you camera has different modes look for a mode called Av, Ap etc or mentions "Apeture" if you can get into an aperture mode see if you can adjust it to something like F8 or higher as this may give you more depth of field.
