newbie help with nikon lenses

Hi to all,

I'm a newbie into dslr photography and have just bought myself a Nikon D3000. The camera came with the 18-55mm vr lense and I also bought a tamron 70-300mm lense at the same time. I know that the vr lense is a af-s fitment, but does the af-s stand for? Can i put older Nikon lenses onto the camera?

Yes you can, but they will only work with manual focus. Nikon in their wisdom removed the focus motors from these cameras, so you need lenses with AF-S which have them built-in to the lenses.
