Editing photos - black and white with a coloured object

Hello

Can someone advise what software is used to create the photographs that are balck and white but have a coloured object in it? Example would be a scene of London is Blacka nd White but here is a bright red bus in the foreground.

Is it Photoshop or are their otehr software packages avaialble capable of doing this? Is there any other way?

Thank you

This technique is called "colour popping". You can do it with most photo editing software. You will probably find more tutorials (sorry, I do not have a link to one at the moment) for PS than any other.

Basically, any software where you can have layers is the easiest.

Create your photo in colour, create a layer copy over the top and turn it black and white, then use either the eraser or a mask to cut out or paint over the b&W layer in the area you want turned to colour.

A lot of new cameras will do this in camera. Both my Sony NEX and Nikon d5100 will do this. What camera have you got?

OK, I was just about to jump in with a "the camera is irrelevant", when I remembered reading something about this being part of the D5100's capabilities.... checked it out and it's on page 120 of your Manual. I've no idea whether it does a better job than editing as described above, but it can only be applied to Jpegs in camera, so if you're a Raw shooter you'll need the suggestions above and do it in editing,

There was, I think, a decent tutorial for this kind of editing on here when it was PhotoRadar - before it got re-organised - and now I cannot find it (or any other trace of a list of tutorials).

However, I came across this one for you.
