Hi I have had to re-register from my old logon for this website, the old website which was Photoradar?

Anyway I'm also looking for some good advice on buying a new camera, so I don't know if I'm in the wrong place?

I've been using Olympus cameras and lenses for literally my whole life, but recent events in Japan, the scandal, and the dwindelling of new cameras from Olympus has really got me thinking about an switch to one of the other makers of cameras.

Is this something someone could advice me on? Should I look at Canon or a NIkon digital SRL? Or is Sony and Pentax a better option now? I must confess to having been 'out of the game' in terms of reading reviews for everything except my beloved Fourthirds cameras for literally ages, so I'm just don't know where to start.

I had an Olympus E-5 up until recently, so it's not as though I'm just starting out and I don't know what I'm doing in shooting.

So what's the best bet for me?

First: trying logging in with your old name and no password. There were some "issues" during the conversion. Once in, reset the password. If you want to use your old username. The photos linked to that account are gone, so your choice.


Nikon did announce a new camera today The D800 looks nice and I am a Canon guy.


Generically asking about different brands is just going to start a flame war. How about you give us a budget of what you want to spend and then we can narrow it down? Make a list of a few features you really want, that will help as well.

As for a budget, I am a very serious amateur but I know I think that the D800 might be a little bit too rich for my blood – and my wife's! Plus of course I will need to think about lenses, which is extra.

I would say I would be happy to spend £10000 on a body and maybe the same again on lenses until I get a feel for the new format.

Sorry I meant £1000 not £10000. I would need to pay for a divorce as well if if I spent £10000!

Whichever brand and you will get them all mentioned go to a dealer and handle all the makes, see which ones are suitable for your hands, weight etc.

Since you are already familiar with the 4/3 format, may I suggest you very seriously look at the Nikon 1 line, particularly the V1. It will give you a really great little camera that will more than match the E-5 and with the LT-1 lens mount adapter, you can pick up some older Nikkor lenses and use them. The two lens system that is available with the camera will give you a reach of 27mm to 300mm, and by adding in a longer Nikkor lens, you can move that way down the field.

Unless you regularly print to sizes larger than 24x30, you will be very pleased with the output. Above 24x30, you had better be on a tripod if you want a sharp photo. A local car club just ordered one of the shots that I had taken at the Concours d'Elegance last November, and I sent it to a lab that I use regularly for large prints. They have it mounted on the wall of their club room. 96" x 120". I must say that I am very pleased with the way the photo looks. Here it is in low resolution:

Well if you gave up on the e-5 there is still no other slr offering from Olympus. and the fact you don't like any of the new olypmus cameras, i'm guessing you don't want an EVF either so that rules out Sony too. So i would look at Canon,Nikon and Pentax offerings. Like the d7000,K5 and 60d. I'm a nikon user but had a play with the k5 the other day and i was very impressed.
