To be honest I really can't see what the problem is. Converting you NEF filers to DNG, which is an open format by the way, is a fully automatic process and once started requires no further input from yourself.

As for it consuming more space I think you will find that the DNG version has a slightly smaller file size than the original NEF. So unless you keep both formats, and why would you as the DNG has all the information the NEF file had, you will actually save space.

Personally I convert all my files to DNG as a matter of course, even though I use CS5 which would happily open my D90 NEFs, and once I have checked to see the conversion went OK I delete the original NEFs. I only wish my D90 would save in DNG format natively, as does the Hasselblad, and if it's good enough for them it's good enough for me!

Hopefully one day all the camera manufactures will finally come to their senses and adopt a common format for their RAW files and we will see an end to this.

And as much as I hate to say it the good guys in all of this are Adobe who's DNG is still compatible with older versions of PS. The bad guys are the likes of Nikon who insist on changing their NEF format every time they launch a new model.

Good points Ashely. I have thought about switching and converting to DNG on import as well. It does save space and will be more compatible in the future. Or should be anyway. Pentax also can save to DNG in some of their models. No Nikon or Canon do that I know.

All Raw files are versions based on the Tiff format, but with a bespoken compression applied, which causes the problems.

Did not realise that the Pentax supported DNG, good for them.

Perhaps someone needs to knock their heads together.

Viewing raw files

Hi
This is my first post.
I understand you are having a problem viewing raw files from you D7000 and I sometimes use this program http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/ it is a codec for window photo viewer it so you can view raw files in it.
I am running Windows 7 and it works on that.
Hope this helps.

Good link but I think the OP's problem is more to do with being able to edit the RAW files rather than just view them.

You can also use the free Google Picasa program to view RAW and DNG files. Picasa has some basic editing functions but I'm not sure if they work on RAW files, I've never tried.

Found it! Nikon's latest codec supports the D4, so it should do for the D7000 too. Probably not for DNG, mind you.
