Exif Data?

Can anyone guide/point/kick me in the right direction to find out how to view the exif data on the photos uploaded to the galleries?

Hi Sie

I don't know if you can see the EXIF data in the galleries. The only way I can do it is to download a copy of the photo and look at the EXIF data on my PC. I've tried it with your Fur 'n Murps photo and that works.

Can you tell me what you did, cos i tried saving the photo (Fur 'n Murps) back to my computer but all i got was very basic exif data. Basically just which camera it was shot with and none of the usual focal length, ISO, exposure time stuff. What am i doing wrong?

Ok, here's another way using a good piece of freeware. First download and install Opanda IExif from here http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/index.html You can install the shortcut to the application on the desktop although it really isn't necessary. Once installed click on your image and then enlarge it by using the magnifying glass (top right of your image). Opanda only works on the original full sized image not the reduced size image or thumbnails. Once the image is opened to full size right click on it and you will now see as part of the menu options "View Exif/GPS/IPTC with IExif". An Opanda pop-up window will now appear giving you all the Exif data applying to your image. Another way (if you want to view Exif data prior to uploading) is to open the image in Windows Explorer and repeat the right click view Exif etc etc.

I actually use the Pro edition (Opanda IExifPro) which costs USD19.95 which also allows you to view the Exif data for TIFF images plus one or two extra features.

Of course the method described above only works for images that have not had their Exif data stripped out, either deliberately by the user or by using for instance the 'save for web' option in Photoshop which automatically strips out Exif data.

By the way, your image was shot using a Canon 450D, f/22, Apeture Priority, ISO200 and a focal length of 50mm plus a few other things.

At the end of the day PhotoRadar should be supplying that information and the fact that it doesn't
makes it less than useless enough said.

Why should it be so important to read the Exif information on images posted here anyway - surely a photograph is either GOOD , BAD or INDIFFERENT - irrespective of the Exif info or lack of such info - it is how the observer views the image that should be the most important thing in any gallery based site - and as such Photoradar does and "reasonable" job at presenting these images - if somewhat less profficently than the old DCM site did.

There are still many deficiencies in this site needing attention - and improvements have been promised - so rather than criticising the site for its lack of supplying Exif info to each and every photo - why not give the admin a chance to attend to these promised improvements - like better presentation , easier posting of and linking images to forums etc - it will all take time - please don't cloud the issue by bemoaning this trivial lack of supplying Exif Info.

After all such info is - easily and readily obtained - as already stated very informatively by Harry - by using such excellent free software as the Jeffrey's Exif Viewer.

As an example - for those still requiring this info - click on the link below - you will see EVERY LITTLE DETAIL about a recently posted image of mine - I have nothing to hide - unlike many who still seem reluctant to post their "precious images" here - for whatever reason.

But why people should be so inquisitive as to wish to see ALL this technical info - frankly baffles me somewhat.

Fortunately this information doesn't divulge the colour of my underwear etc - it is EXTENSIVE however - informative in parts - but quite frankly - exceptionally "boring".

You use a compact so it wouldn't be of interest to you, but for those using a DSLR it can provide a lot of information like ISO used, WB and lens etcetc. As for not posting on this site the T & C don't incourage people to do so as well as its site been a pain to post images into, as the main site and picture site aren't linked correctly.

As to the colour of your underwear brown springs to mind!

Thanks everyone for your replies, especially Forseti and Harry for your useful info. - I appreciate it, thanks.

The reason i asked the question was that in my own gallery i have 1 photo which when clicked on gives the exif data, the other 2 (although i put them in in exactly the same way) don't seem to show any info. I wondered if it was something i was doing, but i guess it's just the foibles of this site at the moment. Until it's completely sorted and proven then i will remain reluctant to post many images on here.

To answer Gil - for me, as a beginner to this hobby, it is quite useful to see how more experienced photographers have gone about their art. It is quite difficult at times to get feedback (although i have to say that i did get some good advice on the old DCM site) and this just helps to fit another litlle piece of the jigsaw. I do think you're very brave, though Gil, admitting to the fact that your underwear is "EXTENSIVE", "informative" but "exceptionally BORING" !
