Mark,

I think this is one of those subjects that you will never ever get everyone to agree about!

And we don't know why people upload photos; maybe just to show to relatives abroad, or to share with other people what their country looks like, or what their hobbies are. There could be lads of reasons and they might not be about improving their photography at all.

This is the photo I was talking about; I believe it scored quite well in the competition, but it did not win.

And here are the two contrasting comments, both people are experienced photographers by the way:

"I liked the idea of this shot but, in my opinion, there were a few too many leaves in it that made it look a little too cluttered. Sorry."

"thought the leaves over the cover really added something to the image - almost hiding the 'square' making it more subtle and less 'obvious' to the eye!
Well done on a great shot, terrific composition and wonderful lighting."

I hate to say it, but I think the galleries were actually better on the old site. For a company that produces photography magazines they seem unwilling to (they must be unwilling, I mean honestly, making such a poor photo site TWICE in a row?) do the job correctly. The only redeeming quality this time is that I think they can be fixed this time.

Someone needs a stern talking to by someone in a higher position. Doubly so if the same person is in charge (group director or whatever the title is) as was last time.

The advantage this time, as far as I'm concerned, is that you get to see a series of random photos when you go to a forum.

But trying to find a particular photo, even if you know the photographer, is hard work!

Over the past few months, I have become more active on Flickr and elsewhere, and only come back here to see how it's going. And because some of my 'old' friends are still here.

I used to enjoy the weekend competition, but it was taking over my life, so I now only enter occasionally, when I'm asked on a personal basis.

Reinardina I think reading all the posts we can almost all agree that the galleries aren't quite right yet and they need to be looked at , I think that's about as close as we're going to get to a unanimous decision .

As for your image I totally agree with the second comment , that's two against one so we must be right

Mark,

So an agreement of sorts after all!

And thank you for the endorsment of my picture! It's three against one, as I, of course, also agree with number two!

Happy New Year!

Personally, I say bring it on. I put my images up because a) I like them and b) I want others to tell me where I might improve.
It's all very nice for someone to leave a note that says, "I love it", but it doesn't do anything to improve my techniques.
Maybe I'm alone on this, but I'm a big boy and I can take it, so critique away.

I just think the whole process is far more complicated than it used to be.

I love the leaves, they provide colour and a nice contrast to the man hole cover.
