Have you set the Aperture ring on the lens to maximum value? If it still won't work, then check your manual to see how to enter lens date into the camera.

Many thanks to all those who have me with my questions, I know have the 50mm prime working great, still have a problem with the Vivitar but I'm sure I will sort it, the problem was I think? that I have to use manual mode only and switch off the auto focus.
