Dust in lens from new

The other day I bought a Canon 50mm 1.8 II lens from Amazon, when it turned up I gave it a quick look over and while I was marvelling at the size of the aperture I noticed a speck on one of the elements inside the lens.

I have taken a few shots with the lens and I don't think it is visible in any of the shots. Is it worth sending back for a replacement or is it quite common? I wondering if its worth the hassle of sending back if the replacement may have the same.

Also If I record the dust data on my 550d is there any way of viewing this information?

Thanks

Chris

Take a photo of something white, like a door or ceiling at f22 and overexpose it so it is nice and white, then load it onto your computer & zoom in and check to see if you can see and specks, (being careful to differentiate between a dust spot on the sensor and a speck in the lens. (dust spots on censor are usually round and often have a halo and are pale, specks can be darker and irregular shaped.)

Tried the test and there is only one faint spot but it appears on both my lenses. Its too faint to worry about though.

I had a look at the returns procedure on Amazon it looked pretty simple so arranged for a return. Estimated delivery was the 29th and they pick up the old one on the 30th so wont be without a lens.

New one turned up this morning, still has a small amount of dust inside but probably not as bad as the first. I guess the super cheap lens just have bad sealing. Cant fault Amazon for service though, one day delivery the day before Christmas, that's with super saver delivery too.
