Sorry Deena, didn't mean to be pushy 8). Just with the forum changes coming soon I wondered if we might be missing a week. Obviously not the case.

I've just put the new theme up for this weekend's competition. A very general theme

Could someone please make the Entries/Chat threads sticky. Thanks

I was out all morning too and had a few that could be used, as I was in a cemetary - lots of old things there! Regrettable, all taken before the theme was announced so unusable. But I may be back over the weekend (weather permitting) so might get something.

Finally got around to my ups and downs.

Above: Mannananscloak - The Poplars
I think you've got great subject matter but could possibly have improved the composition by moving slightly to the right to get the full door visible in the gateway. This would also have move the "Poplars" sign off the centre line. I've had a play around with contrast and saturation and I personally think you could really bring out the shapes and textures with a little processing. PM me if you'd like to see what I mean (I can either post on forum or PM you). Great spot though.

Below: kentlass - Broken and neglected
Again, this was great subect matter but I think it needed something in the composition to make it stand out. Maybe changing the angle, tighter crop. Since it's such a gritty envinronment, I think b&w works well. If you'd like to see how I might have processed it, let me know.

I'm not saying i know better - it's just my style and opinion :-)

I voted for Semaj: Many Windows which I thought was a stunning capture. The movement in the water, the halo of light around the building and the wonderful lighting in the wondows.

Other shots that were in the running for my vote were: Number 185, Office Block and The Greenhouse. It was a great theme but very challenging. I was surprised there were so many great shots.

Sorry for being so late with my ups and downs. First and foremost, congratulations to Deena it was in my top four but I voted for Mathew's 'The Greenhouse'. Loved this as soon as i saw it. Very clever taking the shot from the inside, the ivy, condensation and the tree through the open door and the quirky angle all went to make a very atmospheric image.
Others I liked were TwinnieE's "Late night shopping", so evocative, an idealised image of Christmas shopping. You are very lucky living where you do [Oxford street is more of a nightmare scenario!]. The other contender was 'Steamy train window' which was my up, so see below!

Up

Pea24 - 'Steamy train window'. Great idea! Like the condensation but the one girl who was pulling a face made it feel too 'set up' somehow. I think I would have enjoyed it more if they had looked startled, as if you had just rapped on the window. It really suited the B&W conversion and I love the expression of the man on the opposite platform who is obviously trying to work out what is going on.

Down

SieSmith - 'Doorway to Wapakoneta history'. It certainly fitted the brief but I found myself wishing you could have got a little closer so that the entrance dominated the frame more.

As for my own entry I struggled with this theme but wanted to put an entry in so I can honestly say very little thought went into it. Hubby and I were out with the dog walking along the Cray Estuary when I spotted the excavator [?] so took a snap of it. I had my camera with me as I am trying to teach myself how to photograph birds in flight My other option was a photograph of my dog through the car window, not very exciting!

Pea24 Thank you for the feedback and I would be very happy to see what you would have done with my image! You are right about changing the angle. I should have gone down the bank to get closer as well. I only took the one photo and am embarrassed to say I put no thought into it at all
