A Exercise In Flower Photography

A grey overcast day today so perfect for flower photography and the sweet peas were out.

A long lens (narrow angle of view) allowed me to pick the background I wanted for the flowers.

Here in the first one I used a large sunflower as a backdrop.

Then changing my point of view I used a part of the garden that was in deep shade for the backdrop to this one.

For those interested this was the subject.

Both taken with a 70-300mm and natural light and straight processing in CO6 Express.

Very good example sof close up photography. You chose the background well. The colours pop, especially from the dark background shot.

That sounds like a challenge.

The first pic of the sweet-pea is lovely. The choice of background is inspired and the foreshortening from the long lens works brilliantly.

The second one doesn't have the same vibrancy and needs something more than a black background to lift it up. Try giving them a little light spray of water with an atomiser, that'll give them some sharp detail to focus the eye on. BTW, I use a piece of black paper in this sort of shoot, it saves trying to position everything against a suitable background.

The third one, I'm afraid is a bit of a mish-mash. It's confused, with no real focus. Your first one has thrown the sunflower out of focus and it provides an interesting coloured background, but here you can see it's a sunflower, but it's just out of focus and struggling with the sweet-pea for dominance. Even if it wasn't there I would find it hard to decide what I'm supposed to be looking at.

Have a look at these. One with blue paper background and water spray, the other with black paper.

Because you right-clicked on the image in your gallery, and not on the magnifying glass.

This site has been designed very poorly, so over the top of all of the images is a transparent layer.
