Mark,

After doing much more research on the various monitors available, my next purchase will be a Dell Ultrasharp IPS panel monitor. The reason being is the viewing angle, which is 178 degrees, meaning that you get very little in the way of colour and light/dark variation like you do with TN panels, relative to head position.

Currently on my Samsung T240 (which is a few years old now), I think the viewing angle is 168 degrees and if I move my head 2" inches higher or lower, I get very noticeable changes in colour and brightness, etc. After talking to my brother-in-law who works in a major marketing/publishing house, he informed me that they all use IPS panel technology in their departments.

Have a look at the Dell U2410 amd U2412 models. They are around the £300 mark but will reward you with far greater colour accuracy, which can be crucial if you print your images.

LCDs are older technology and gradually being replaced by LEDs but have been cheaper

LEDs last longer, have better contrast (and better true black) and use less power - being newer, "better", greener technology the manufacturers are concentrating their development on LED

Quality-wise I'd say that LEDs are now on par with LCDs (apart from top-end LCDs) - and I say all this as someone who has a Dell Ultrasharp LCD (which continues to give me excellent results over the years I've had it)

Thanks a lot for your advice I really appreciate it .

Had a look at a few reviews and was quite taken by the Viewsonic VP2365wb IPS panel monitor , may not have the fastest response times or all the extra bells and whistles but the colour and contrast tests are very good and for £200 ish it's in my budget .

Just got my ViewSonic VP2365 LED back lit monitor and I must say what a stunning monitor , the colours the contrast and the sharpness put my now dead 20" Samsung into the shade by miles . With the IPS panel I can walk right off to one side without any change in picture quality , viewing my pics was was great the macro shots really came into their own with more detail than I'd ever seen before I can highly recommend this monitor and at £207.60 it's a snip .

One other thing I can highly recommend is Ebuyer , placed my order at 16.28 , confirmed at 16.30 , dispatched at 20.42 delivered to my door 10.45 the following morning all on free delivery .

Thanks for everyone's advise

Daniel if you haven't got your monitor yet then please take a close look at the ViewSonic .

Mark

I've never had a monitor play up and still have my OLD 14in CRT up in the attic.

First time for me as well, about 9 months out of waranty the whole think keeps freezing chucking random lines everywhere and going green a few minutes later is sorts itself out again and then at a random interval goes again, swapped leads and tried a different graphics card to be sure.

Most of my old monitors have been passed down or sold.
