Some of them take on a three dimensional quality; just awesome.

I would imagine the "shooting stars" are actually airplanes. Time lapse wouldn't show more than one frame of a shooting star, but it's unlikely to capture the moment at all.

I'm sure you're right, but I would have thought the majority were planes.

I didn't think aircraft had their white (landing) lights on when they were above 10,000ft, in the sky shots I did last summer the aircraft trails come up as a line of green and red dots from the wing lights whereas the satellites come up as solid white trails.

(assuming that aircraft transiting over the area of Utah being photographed were over 10,000ft which seems pretty likely)
