How to convert PSD to JPEG?

I received some great advice here back in June...it basically said to do the PS workflow in 16 bit then save to the master file in PSD or .TIF in 16 bit.

Now comes the part that has stopped me in my tracks....."then when you wish to print or WWW it then make a copy to .jpeg [fill the 8 bit file full, 256 smooth levels per channel ]"

When right clicking on the PSD file the drop down box asks me what format to save it to.... problem is...Jpeg is not there. wHAT AM I MISSING HERE?

Any tips welcome

Hi,
Open your PSD file in Photoshop, then Save As. Select JPEG as your chosen file type.

First of all you have to convert from 16 bit to 8 bit. In photoshop go to IMAGE>>MODE in the dropdown box you will see the option to select 8 bit.
When you have done that you will get the option to save as Jpeg

Beware that line.... it NOT necessary to convert a file to a JPEG for printing if you want to print at home - in fact you'll lose a fair bit of quality if you do that. Printing can be done from a TIFF or PSD. However, if you want a print from a supermarket or other 'down-market' printer then yes, they usually want a Jpeg (though there really shouldn't be a need for that).

As a matter of fact, I'd recommend that anybody who wants a quality print from a Supermarket (or other 'big-box store') insists on using their lovely 16-bit full resolution file.... and if the spotty youth you're dealing with says something like "Oh we can only do Jpegs", tell him he's wrong and take your business elsewhere..... eventually we may all be able to take quality image files to those shops and get the quality we want at the same price as a crappy Jpeg - and get due reward for the effort we've made in shooting Raw and carefully editing the shot.
