Beware that line.... it NOT necessary to convert a file to a JPEG for printing if you want to print at home - in fact you'll lose a fair bit of quality if you do that. Printing can be done from a TIFF or PSD. However, if you want a print from a supermarket or other 'down-market' printer then yes, they usually want a Jpeg (though there really shouldn't be a need for that).
As a matter of fact, I'd recommend that anybody who wants a quality print from a Supermarket (or other 'big-box store') insists on using their lovely 16-bit full resolution file.... and if the spotty youth you're dealing with says something like "Oh we can only do Jpegs", tell him he's wrong and take your business elsewhere..... eventually we may all be able to take quality image files to those shops and get the quality we want at the same price as a crappy Jpeg - and get due reward for the effort we've made in shooting Raw and carefully editing the shot.
