you've caught the action well and it's processed nicely, great depth of field.

But I so want it to be a portrait format so I can see more of her & less of the extraneous stuff in the background.

Just me trying to be clever . I thought by cropping it in this way it showed the focus of the crowd on the athlete. It's always the same when you take hundreds of images, you try some different things so they don't all look the same. A valid observation all the same mate.
