Plea for improved search system for POTY.

I don't agree with Ian and find most of the selected photos, but by no means all (the ones Ian finds crap?), inspiring. The many different ways of approaching the 'taking' of pictures, will help me improve my own skills. (I hope.)

I saw several 'old' favourites of mine, but also a lot of pictures I cannot remember having seen before.

I have tried to 'keep up' with the photographs as they were sent in, but of course, at some point they overtake you. Once that has happened there is no way of catching up. You can see 'the oldest' and 'the latest,' but the majority of the entries are 'stuck in the middle,' never to be seen again. (Unless they are lucky enough to end up on the shortlist.)

May I, again, plead for a search/sorting system that allows you to check out pictures you have missed? Or would like to see again? Maybe based on the period (month or even week) they were entered?

And, before I forget: Congraulations to all of you who made in on to the shortlist!

Reinardina.

Stormsong is right about the manipulation; I wondered about that too. I assumed (over) manipulated photos would automatically be disqualified.

And about the voting ... that's just for fun. I love getting comments more than votes, but they are more often than not accompanied by votes. I was lucky enough to do well on the voting front, but I am well aware that actively looking at entries and commenting/voting, advertises your presence on the site and generates (polite or curious) return visits. I suppose if the voting system was abandoned, and the comment facility stayed, there would be rivalry about the number of comments!

What I cannot stand, are what I call 'empty' votes, that automatically seem to 'stick' to all the images of certain entrants, whether or not the picture has any merit. (I have ranted about this before, so leave it at this!)

I think I can see what others said about the quality being lower than last year. There are some absolutely stunning images in the selections. The kind of stunning were one can't help but wonder why other pictures were even selected as they are not even in the same league. I felt that there were quite a few pictures that I'd consider snapshots, maybe lucky snapshots, but snapshots none the less?

I still wouldn't want to sit in any of the judges shoes, there are some amazing shots in each of the categories.

@Billabong: It's not been released yet. Someone called DC Mag and it should supposedly be up this Friday. There's a thread discussing this here.

As for the initial selection, the professional judges with trained eyes have not seen (as far as I am aware) the shortlisted images yet. They are involved in the final selection only, not the initial selection (if anyone wants the list of initial judges and those judging the final selections, PM me).

How do you know this?

Hi Diego
I think they requested quite a few images (that were strong) for High res so they could make their final selection, its still a real acheivement to have been asked, as aparently over 100,000 images where submitted overall

I Have been selected in the editors choice and I am over the moon, I do deserve to be there. I do not believe the standard has dropped, I just think what the judges are looking for has changed.

The fact that you dont recognise that in the shots explains your own photographic methods and perhaps why you did not get shortlisted? Btw, i never got shortlisted either but I am not sulking!

I don't care. Art is opinion. Get over it.

Hmm... I wondered about digital manipulation too.

I have only just looked at the images - I did check before but they weren't up. It was only when I got the email that I looked.

There are at least three seriously digitally manipulated in the World in Motion category too. I was disappointed to see them in there. It does not detract from the image as such, but it seems to me to be a bit unfair to place them with others that have little or no manipulation. One of these had some kind of fractal filter or something - it was obvious it was a work of art rather than a photo.

Destination Everywhere - I felt some of the photos did not fit the brief.

In the Digital Vision category I was a bit disappointed to see that several people had 2 photos selected. This in itself is not bad and I congratulate anyone who manages to do this. But if the photo looks like it's done by the same photographer or artist, then I think only one photo would suffice.

That said, I prefer this selection as opposed to last years - and I made editor's choice last year!!
