International warranty is fine, provided the purchase meets the conditions for the warranty. If you don't have the warranty documents, you don't have a warranty, and that's how many of the HK lenses are sold. My Tokina lens came with no Tokina warranty but a 7 year Mack warranty.
I'm not sure how Credit Card companies stand on international purchases, especially when as often happens the transaction is done through a 3rd party (PayPal) which is itself based abroad.
I'm playing devil's advocate here. We need to remember that companies will often use small print to get out of what we think are their responsibilities. That goes for camera companies and credit card companies. The HK dealers on eBay are usually quite honest about warranties, saying that the only warranty is through them. I just looked at the first Canon lens that popped up as a buy it now from HK, this is what the listing says about warranty:
HKDZone supplies a full one-year warranty with a sales invoice.
We are responsible for any defects caused by manufacturer.
Damages caused by misuse & failure operating are not covered the warranty.
That says to me that you won't get any joy from Canon UK if the lens goes wrong. You have to send it back to HK.
