Whatever color space you set your camera to, it only works with Jpeg. If you shoot in Raw you have to decide your color space at a later stage (usually when opening the file in LR, PS or the equivalent).

{I have an mental image of Geoff bashing head against a brick wall!}

Mr Pedant here: TIFFs also have a colourspace associated with them!

But whatever is used make sure that it's saved in sRGB if you display on the web - otherwise the colours may be a little muted. But AdobeRGB has a slightly wider gamut - hence the suggested setting and the often use in printing

your absolutely right and it's something i have never really thought about until this thread came along i hadn't realized that the colour space set in camera only applied to jpegs but when you think about it...

ok with that said we should be ignoring sRGB / adobeRGB at the raw processing stage because even adobeRGB's colour space is smaller than the native raw file has to offer
it looks like the colour space we should be using is pro photo as this will accommodate as many colours most cameras can produce

obviously the colour space can be changed at any time during processing but if you start in the raw processing stage with sRGB or adobeRGB for that matter your chucking quite a bit of colour information away before you start

once we have processed the image and are happy with the results a decision would need to be made on what were going to do with our masterpiece
the problem with pro photo colour space is nothing apart from the very best commercial printers can use it and i'm not that sure they can take full advantage of it
so if your using your local printers ( asda , boots , jessops or online equivalents ) then sRGB is what their expecting if you use adobeRGB where sRGB colour space is used for the print you photo will look a little flat especially the reds for some reason

we all know for web use it's sRGB all the way

to sum this up adobeRGB seems a little pointless unless you know that your printer or the commercial printer / print lab can make use of it
something worth checking i suppose

well i'm glad i came across this thread because i was ignorant to the fact raw files have no colour space i just presumed they did and i allways used adobeRGB colour space i think my processing ways are about to change especially for raw processing
