Work related

I thought I'd put these in the critique section.

This was an exercise that we carried out with cosmetic smoke, but it can give you an idea of the conditions we have to work in.

If you can think of any improvements, please let me know

Thanks

Hi Rog,

Some great scenes that you could really do something nice with. I think both shots suffer from high ISO noise, but that may have been necessary due to the poor light conditions. The other thing that's really noticeable is the blacks - they appear a bit of a fuzzy grey (mixture of ISO noise and the smoke). You could play with the levels and curves to try and increase the contrast and saturation of the firefighter.

Have you thought of using an off-camera flash? You could get some corkers!

Cheers Matt

These tend to be one off incidents. I was luckly this time as I was observing when I would normally be playing.

Taken the noise out of this one

the subject matter is certainly interesting, we had a training day with the Brigade (does anyone still call it that these days?) a few months back & sat in a steel container while they demonstrated flash fires, wish I'd taken my camera.

They could both use a bit of brightening up using curves or levels.

The older ones still call it a Brigade, the newer member know it as a Service. Change!!!!!!

I'll have a look at the levels, I'm conscious of losing the feeling of darkness..

Thanks

I like them rog, With an off camera flash as matt said youd get some Crackers, Really nice shots though,

If a flash were to highlight the firefighter against the smoke and dark backround, makeing it all moody and gritty itd look Great,

Dan

Reminds me of just a couple of weeks ago when the cottage to ours at the lake was hit by lightning and burned down. We went in first to see if there was anything else important to get out.

It also reminds me of my time in the navy (once again Royal Canadian Navy after being named Maritime Command since 1968) reserves. Damage control school was very interesting. They tossed some diesel on water and lit it in a mock superstructure of a ship. We had full flash gear and breathers on. They also started pouring water in "weapon hit" locations. We always sank. No win scenario and all.

Not sure why we were doing it, everyone knows officers do not actually do anything

Hi Rog

I think the subject matter is great and as many have pointed out lots of potential.
Reference Mat point on use of flash, definitely off camera, but be careful of the reflective patches they may come out too bright, not a fire and forget situation.

Would be great to see your second try.

Steve

Thanks all for your comments

I'm still learning and only have basic equipment in which to capture the photo's.

This was an exercise I helped set up and will probably the only time I'll have the chance to take pictures like this.

I take the point of the flash and know only too well what can happen with the reflections from the flash. It's the same at night when you try and use your phone to take a picture.

I'm away for a few days, so I'll look at the photo's on my return and see if I can alter them.

Thanks again

Rog
